Cyril Picard’s restaurant is inspired by memories of family picnics in France. “It was always a fun family time,” says Cyril. “Chasing butterflies as a kid and playing ball with your brothers, and the simple sandwiches and salads.”
Nestled in Cabbagetown, MerryBerry is modeled on an urban picnic concept. “Bringing the indoors out and the outdoors in,” Cyril explains. The décor is light and playful: decals of birds and fish, brightly patterned textiles, glass-tiled tabletops. It’s so joyful, in fact, that Cyril says first-timers sometimes gape in awe, like they’ve discovered a hidden chest of jewels.
Regular customers show off MerryBerry to their friends, smiling proudly and ordering their usual picks from the menu—perhaps the Lady K, a baguette sandwich of smoked salmon, goat cheese, mango, roasted red peppers, sprouts and pesto, or a chicken burger with avocado, spinach and a slightly spicy peanut sauce, or a simple and elegant bowl of soup (Cyril’s personal favourite).
