Within the evolving neighbourhood of St. Clair West, businesses come and go; yet Sam’s Hardware has remained a community staple for plumbing, electrical, paint, and household needs since the 1960’s. David Kresz bought the shop from Sam himself and has been manning the counter for over a decade.
David was a loyal customer of Sam’s Hardware while renovating two houses. He noticed a “For Sale” sign on the window, and quickly made an offer. “Most of the hardware stores closed down over the years, and this was the last independent hardware store left in the neighbourhood, David explains. “I thought, if this hardware store goes, I would have to drive across town to one of the big box stores for every screw, nail, and needle, which is a waste of time and money.” David immediately went to the bank for a loan, bought the inventory, rented the space, and set out to save the business.
