Matthew Lee had always been fascinated with creating, experimenting and tinkering with flavours. After running a successful coffee shop, Manic Coffee, for eight years at College and Bathurst, Matthew set his sights on perfecting the art of ice cream making. “Whenever I used to travel for coffee I’d also go to the ice cream or gelato places,” he explains, adding that he admired the taste, texture and freshness of independent ice cream shops across North America and parts of Europe.
Matthew took the tastes and experiences from his travels back home to Toronto and began tinkering with recipes and flavours, eventually launching his own line of ice cream and gelato within the Manic Coffee space in 2011. After a few successful years, Matthew felt that his gelato had the opportunity to shine in its own right, so he renovated a storefront in Toronto’s Koreatown and opened Put A Cone On It in the fall of 2015.
